Many of today's hottest young interior designers — Nate Berkus, Ruthie Sommers, Laura Kirar — were introduced to the national scene in House Beautiful, in an annual tradition called the Next Wave. Here for the first time in five years, the Next Wave is back, with 20 interior designers our editors have picked as the ones to watch.

Catherine Carlson

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
What's new is really what's old. I think of myself as a modern traditionalist. The key is taking beautiful traditional designs and making them clean and relevant to today's lifestyle.

Melanie Coddington

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I've just completed the design of my own home, a turn-of-the-century cottage in Potrero Hill. I call it 'girly modern.' It's a feminine but unfussy combination of vintage and modern pieces, all set against a dreamy blue and cream palette. Except for my bedroom closet, which is hot pink.

Chandos Dodson

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I have had lots of experience in traditional English and French decor. Today my work has much more of an eclectic touch. I love the dichotomy of sleek versus grand. Different periods from Art Deco to centuries-old porcelains, with a touch of Lucite or gilt.

Danielle Fennoy

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I want to dispel the prevailing notion that design is only for the privileged. I feel good design should be accessible to everyone.

Carrie Fundingsland

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I'm responding more to symmetry. I used to be a strong believer in having everything asymmetrical, always finding it more interesting to look at, but now I'm feeling the need to have everything balanced. I think what's changed me is having children!

Sara Gilbane

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I don't claim to be reinventing the sofa, but I do try to put a spin on traditional pieces. Many people think modern is hard, clean lines, or that it's cold. Modern is taking pieces from all periods and rearranging them, reupholstering them, refinishing them in a modern way.

Jason Martin

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
My work isn't modern but it's tailored. I always ask myself, 'Will the space look good once there's been a year's worth of living done in it?' It has to look fresh but can't be something that will look tired/dated in a year.

Andrea Monath Schumacher

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I think the best design honors the past, but keeps an edge in fresh ideas. Intuition plays a big role in my decision-making. It's a feeling one gets when something is just right for the space or a client, or an image one wants to portray.

Kyle Schuneman

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I'm fascinated by the way people live, and because of this I don't dictate how they should live. Instead I really try to pull out each client's innate style and have their space reflect their individuality in a tasteful way.

Rebecca Tier Soskin

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?
I spend time looking for great bargains and old furniture that needs new life. Taking simple, rustic yet classic pieces and painting them, adding bold fabrics, and making them look trendy and chic is not only affordable but a beautiful way to make a statement.
