Horses are powerful, intelligent, and breathtakingly beautiful. They may have been domesticated around 6,000 years ago. Their bodies are well suited to running.
They are fleet of foot and well-balanced, traits that help them to avoid predators in the wild.
There are about 300 breeds of domestic horses, each adapted to different human needs. "Hot bloods" have speed and endurance. "Cold bloods" are large and strong, capable of doing heavy but slow work for long periods of time.
"Warmbloods" are often used for riding. There are also a few subspecies of truly wild horses, like the zebra and the Przewalski's horse, which have never been domesticated.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Horse Head
1. Begin by drawing a circle. This guiding shape will help you to form the part of the head between the eyes, ears, and jaw.
2. Draw a smaller circle, not connected to the first. This will help you draw the snout.
3. Draw a curved line between the sides of the circles, outlining the top of the horse's face.
4. Draw a pair of overlapping curved lines between the circles on the opposite side, fully enclosing the face.
5. Draw a curved line along one side of the smaller circle. This outlines the top of the horse's nostril.
6. Draw another curved line alongside the small circle. This contours the front of the horse's mouth.
7. Draw a curved "W" shaped line along the small circle. This outlines the horse's lips.
8. Draw a short curved line from the front of the mouth, denoting the space between the lips. Draw a "C" shaped line at the corner of the mouth.
9. Add more detail to the nostril. Draw a small oval with a curved line beside it.
10. Erase the guide lines of the small circle.
11. Draw a long, curved line from the top of the large circle, outlining the horse's neck.
12. Draw another curved line from the large circle, outlining the bottom of the neck.
13. Draw a curved line inside the large circle, between the front of the face and the top of the neck. Connect it to the outer lines using short lines.
14. Erase the guide lines of the large circle, leaving a portion to form the jaw.
15. Draw the horse's ear. Use curved lines that meet at a point. Then, detail the interior of the ear. Draw a small oval, and extend short lines from its top and bottom.
16. Sketch the horse's mane. Use pairs of curved lines the meet at points.
17. Erase overlapping lines from the ear. Draw the visible portion of the remaining ear. Use a pair of curved lines that meet at a point.
18. Sketch the horse's almond-shaped eye. Use three curved lines to outline the roughly triangular shape.
19. Draw a curved line across the eye. Enclose two small circles within it, and shade one to indicate the pupil. Contour the horse head with curved lines down the neck, near the eye, in front of the jaw, and parallel to the top of the face.
20. Color your cartoon horse head. Horses come in many colors and patterns - spotted, solid, or blotched, brown, tan, white, black, or grey.
