What is a printable?

A printable is a digital file (often a pdf or jpg) that your audience can download from your blog or online shop and print out for personal use.

How to make money selling printables

Selling printables on your blog is not only a great way to increase your blog income, it's also a brilliant way to help your audience.

The trick to making money with digital products is to create a printable that offers value to your reader.

When you write a blog post, you help your audience by answering their questions and finding solutions for their problems. Your printable should do the same.

If your printable solves a problem for your customer, there will be a bigger need to buy it and it will have a higher success rate.

Here's few examples of common problems and what kind of printable creates a solution:

Problem > Printable > Result

Disorganised > Planner > Being more organised

Bored child > Colouring pages > Entertained child

Too busy/no design skills > Templates > Faster document creation

Lack of fun learning resources > Educational games > Resource for teachers or home schooling mums.

The secret to success with digital products is to create a printable that is extremely useful and that your audience is searching for.

The best software to create printables

If you have no graphic design experience you might wonder where you can make printables or what software program you should use.

What program you use to make printables will depend a bit on what kind of printable you're trying to make. Some people use Word, Illustrator, Photoshop or Google Docs. But some of these programs can be tricky to use.

My favourite program to make printables is Canva.

Canva is an online design tool that is so easy to use that even the least creative person can design amazing looking printables in no time.

And unlike some of these other programs, Canva is free to use so that's a huge bonus.

How To Make Printables

Before creating a printable ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What is the purpose of your printable
  2. Who is your ideal client for this printable
  3. What specific problem will it solve
  4. Is this printable going to be a freebie or paid product
  5. What format will be best to deliver the content of this printable

Once you've got the answers to these questions, you're ready to create the actual printable.

Like I said before, it's easiest to create your printables in Canva.

How to make printables in Canva

1. Go to Canva and create a free account.

2. Select a document size. If you're creating an ebook or checklist or other document that will go well on an A4, I recommend sticking to the A4 format because it's easy to print.

3. I recommend to avoid using Canva's templates, some of these templates are not for commercial use. To be on the safe side, design your printable yourself.

4. Design your layout and add your content.

5. Download your printable in pdf format.

How to sell printables on your blog

Once you've got your printable finished and saved in the right file format, it's time to sell it on your blog.

To be able to sell digital products on you blog you need shopping cart functionality that is connected to a payment gateway like Paypal or Stripe.

A great tool for this is Sendowl.

I use Sendowl to sell my digital products and I love how easy it is to use.

Sendowl  lets you upload your digital product, track your sales, create upsells or discounts and you can even use it to sell physical products, subscriptions and services.

It also integrates with your email marketing platform so you can add buyers of a certain product to the right subscriber group.

Another great thing about Sendowl is the price, a lot of shopping cart tools are quite expensive but with Sendowl you can start selling your digital products for only $9 per month.

Check out Sendowl's pricing plans here.

Landing Pages

The best way to sell your digital products is to create a landing page with its only focus to sell your printable.

You can create landing pages with email marketinng platforms such as Mailerlite andConvertkit.

For an example of a landing page, check out my landing pages here and here.

Sales Funnels

A great way to get your website visitors on your landing pages is by creating a sales funnel. I won't go into depth about sales funnels in this post but the basic idea is this:

  1. You offer a helpful freebie on your blog, you mention this freebie on your home page and in all relevant blog posts and on your social media accounts.
  2. Your audience signs up to your email list and receives their freebie.
  3. After signing up they get redirected to your tripwire page where you offer a really helpful digital product or printable for a discounted price. This product should cost somewhere between $5 and $17 and offer a ton of value.
  4. If they buy your tripwire product they get redirected to an upsell page where you offer another more expensive product. This could be your main product.

As you can see, offering a freebie is an easy way to get your audience into your sales funnel and exposed to several of your offers.

To create a successful sales funnel, you need to make sure that all digital products in your funnel are closely related and super relevant for your audience.

This is how you make printables to sell on your blog

I hope this DIY guide helps you create your first printable and make sure to try Sendowl to upload your digital products quickly and easily.
