A note regarding Squarespace 5 sites:
Squarespace 5, our legacy platform, doesn't allow permissions to be edited. However, we can cancel or remove the site.

Sharing content on social media
Use the built-in share option to push new content to your preferred social media profiles as you publish it to your site. This is a great shortcut, cutting down the time of manually opening your social profiles and copying and pasting links.
Note: This isn't an automatic sync between Squarespace and your social networks. Repeat the steps to publish and share your content for every post you want to publish.
Before you begin
- To share content, you have to connect your accounts and select a push target if necessary first. It's not possible to share content without connected accounts.
- To ensure you connect your site to the correct account, log out of your social accounts before you begin. If you're logged in, the connection will default to that account.
What content you can share and where
You can push the following Squarespace collection items to these social media platforms:
| | | | Tumblr | |
Blog Posts | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Events | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Products | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Album tracks* | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✕ | ✓ |
Gallery pages* | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✕ |
* Album pages and gallery pages are only available for Squarespace version 7.0.
To share content to a different platform, or re-share after pushing, manually share the URL.
Limitations
Platform | Limitations |
| Facebook doesn't allow third-party tools like Squarespace to share content with personal Facebook Profiles on someone's behalf. You can still push Squarespace content to a connected Facebook Page (typically used for businesses), or you can share links manually in a Facebook post. To learn about the difference between Profiles and Pages, visitFacebook's documentation. |
| We currently support pushing content to personal LinkedIn profiles only. To share your site's content on your company's LinkedIn page or business account, you can post the link directly in LinkedIn. |
| Blog posts and products must have thumbnail images to display on Pinterest. |
Tumblr | Image blocks and video blocks don't display in the dashboard view on Tumblr. Image blocks appear as an External Image button in the dashboard view, and video blocks appear as rectangular icons. Both types of blocks display in full on the public view of a Tumblr blog. The following content from blog posts will display on Tumblr:
To display multiple images in a blog post, use multiple image blocks. |
Connect your accounts
Before you can push content to your social media accounts from Squarespace, you'll need to connect your accounts:
- In the Home menu, click Settings, then click Connected Accounts.
- Click Connect Account.
- Choose a service and enter your login credentials.
- Click on the account you just connected.
- For Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, ensureShow Push Option is checked.
- For Tumblr, select aPrimary Blog from the drop-down menu.
- For Facebook and Pinterest, select a push target.
- Create a default post format to customize the text of the post.
- ClickSave.
- Repeat these steps for each account you want to connect.
Select a push target (Facebook and Pinterest)
For Facebook and Pinterest, select aPush Targetfrom the drop-down menu in each connected account's settings. This tells us where to post if you have multiple Facebook Pages or Pinterest boards.
For Facebook, select a Facebook Page (for example, your business or store's official page). For Pinterest, select a board. You can only set one Page or board for pushing content on each account.
If you don't choose a Page or board, your content won't push to the account. For Facebook, the Push Target drop-down is limited to 25 accounts.
Create a default post format
You can customize what appears in all posts to a social profile in itsDefault Posting Format field. Some text always displays by default in post previews. Customizing your default post format adds text in addition to the post preview.
This helps keep your posts consistent, but you can also customize each post individually when pushing to add more details. Repeat this step to customize each social profile where you publish your content.
Use a combination of custom text and the variables below to format your posts:
- %t - The title of the item you're sharing
- %a - The author of the item you're sharing
- %u - The URL of the item you're sharing
You must leave at least one variable in the field to push your post to most services, even if you choose not to customize the format. If you're using multiple variables, add spaces between them so the posts format correctly.
Here's how the formatting "%t %a %u" will appear on Facebook:
- Red -Title (%t)
- Yellow - Author (%a)
- Green - URL (%u)
Twitter best practices
When sharing with Twitter, always include the %u variable to ensure that your tweet will link to your content.
Pinterest best practices
When sharing with Pinterest, you don't need to include the %u variable because the post's URL pushes automatically.
Publish and share your content
After connecting your accounts and customizing your default posting formats, you're ready to start sharing your content as you publish it. How you push content to social media depends on the type of collection item you're sharing:
- Events and blog posts
- Products
- Gallery pages
- Album tracks
- In the item's editor, click the Share tab.
- Switch the toggle on for each profile you want to share to.
- Click the Content tab.
- Change the item's status to Published.
- Save your changes.
- In the item's editor, click the Share tab.
- Switch the toggle on for each profile you want to share to.
- Click the Item tab.
- Change the item's status to Visible.
- Save your changes.
- In the gallery item's settings, click the Social tab.
- Locate the profile you want to share to and click Disabled.
- Switch the toggle on.
- Click the Content tab.
- Change the item's status to Published.
- Save your changes.
- Click on the track under Tracks in the Album panel.
- In the track's settings, click the Social tab.
- Locate the profile you want to share to and click Disabled.
- Switch the toggle on.
- Click the Content tab.
- Change the item's status to Published.
- Save your changes.
To share an item again on the same social network, manually share its URL. It isn't possible to post the same item multiple times using the push method. To learn what displays when you manually share a URL, visit How content displays in social posts.
To learn more about editing content, visit our guides on blog posts, products, events pages, gallery pages, and album pages.
Troubleshooting
Content is pushing to the wrong account
If you connected your site to the wrong account, click on the account in theConnected Accounts panel, then clickDisconnect. In a separate tab, log out of your social account, then follow the steps in this section reconnect it.
Content is wrong on Facebook
If you're seeing the wrong thumbnail images or descriptions in Facebook posts from Squarespace, there's a chance Facebook doesn't have the most updated information. For help, visit Troubleshooting Facebook sharing issues.
Content isn't posting to Pinterest
Blog posts and products must have thumbnail images to display on Pinterest.
Content isn't appearing on Tumblr
Certain block content, such as gallery blocks, won't display in blog posts pushed to Tumblr. Image blocks and video blocks won't display in the dashboard view of Tumblr. For more details on how content appears when shared on Tumblr, visit Using Tumblr with Squarespace.
More social sharing options
To explore different ways you can use social media with your site, visit Understanding social sharing with Squarespace.
Just a few of the options are:
- Add Share buttons to collection pages.
- Add Pinterest Save buttons over products and other content.
- Add icons that link to your social profiles.
- Add a like button to pages using code provided by Facebook.
